Taking this theme into consideration, Al Shifa Hospital & SKSSF signed and agreement to provide treatment to 10000 patients at very low Cost. The Treaty was signed within Panakkad Syed Abbas Ali Shihab Thangal - SKSSF, and Mr.P.Unneen - Chairman & Managing Director, AL Shifa Hospital. The relief department of SKSSF 'Sahachari' Relief Cell is responsible for such humanitarian deed, and Al Shifa Kidney Foundation will be controlling the scheme. | The world AIDS day was conducted at Al Shifa with general awareness displays on the 1st of December, 2009 at Al Shifa Hospital. The functions was inaugurated by our honourable MLA-V. Sasikumar. The programme was conducted in association with Al Shifa college of Nursing and Al Shifa Blood Bank. | FIRST TIME IN MALABAR – CERVICAL DISC REPLACEMENT SURGERY | |

| Al Shifa Hospital sets new standards by performing rare surgeries for the first time in the Malabar. Mr Faizal Abdulla (47), a native of Saudi Arabia and a businessman, had been suffering from recurring pain on the neck and arms for the years and more. He had visited many hospitals in his native and abroad. Since he was not satisfied with the treatment and procedures, he had no other options but search for another alternative. Mr Faizal and his business partner Mr.Faizal Jifri set foot in Kerala and was lead to Al Shifa Hospital. Our Chief Neuro Surgeon Dr.Praveen MS, McH,DNB after proper investigations including MRI identified and informed the problem to Mr.Faizal. Dr.Praveen identified and informed the solution for a Cervical Disc Replacement Surgery with artificial Disc. After confirmation from Mr. Faizal, the surgery was done on June 13th under the able hands for Dr Praveen, and anaesthetists Dr Sajith MD DA, Dr. Saajan DA,. The surgery was completed in 4 hrs and he was discharged after 6 days. On 19th July, Mr Faizal and his partner left for home happy. The Laboratory Department of Al Shifa Hospital bags the Second Ranking in the External Quality Assessment Scheme(EQAS) for the year 2008. Al Shifa's Laboratory comes under the Elite group comprising of over 629 laboratories all the states of India and also Anadaman and Nepal. The various analytes included in the programme are: Glucose, urea, creatinine, total protein, albumin, calcium, total cholesterol, sodium, potassium, lithium, SGOT, SGPT, ALP. Evaluation of the report is based on WHO recommend method expression i.e. Variance Index Score (VIS). |

| AL SHIFA KIDNEY FOUNDATION CELEBRATES ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY | |

| Under the auspices of Al Shifa charitable trust the kidney foundation celebrates its first year with all the patients who underwent dialysis including the kidney transplant patient. The function was inaugurated by Sri Arimbra Mohammed Master (District Panchayat President). Among the chief guests Sri Kella Mohammed(MD, Kella Group of Companies), Sri Muthu Haji, Mr.P Unneen(CMD, Al Shifa Hospital), Dr. E.G.Mohankumar,(Medical Suptd.,Al Shifa Hospital) and our first Kidney Transplant Patient Mr.Vijayan. Mr Kella Mohgammed also promised to help more kidney related patients. In the first year itself the trust conducted 9Kidney transplants, of which all were present at the venue. A photo exhibition, inaugurated by Mr. P.K Mohammed Haji (Public Relations Director,ASH) was also organised. |

Mr. Vijayan, who hails from the central district of Kerala, Malappuram, underwent kidney transplantation on February 03, 2008. Under the guidelines of consultant Nephrologist Dr. Pradeep Krishnan, the 30 year old with Chronic kidney failure since 2007, has now became free enough to go wherever he wants. A father of two and working as an asst. mechanic in Saudi Arabia, Vijayan noticed swelling of his legs in mid 2006. The financially poor family was stunned by the subsequent declaration of the dreaded situation by the Nephrologists. He was guided to the shifa kidney foundation and has been on subsidised dialysis. Countrymen lead by the President of Wandoor village council formed the committee to help Vijayan and his family. With the advise of Dr. Pradeep Krishnan, Vijayan started to dream about a world without dialysis after transplantation. But, a suitable kidney & a huge amount involved was an immense task for them Elder sister Padmini, 38 yrs old, mother of two, was happy to donate her kidney. Shifa kidney foundation offered to bear the 50% of the total cost incurred for the transplantation, making things easier. Everything went on as planned on February 3rd, 2008. Lead by consultant Urologist and transplant surgeon Dr. P. M. Murali at Al shifa, the total surgical team performed the surgery and within 7 days Vijayan & Padmini was discharged bringing new hopes to their family. |

| March 13, 2008, is World Kidney Day, observed in the world to raise awareness of kidney disease and educate persons at risk about the importance of prevention and early detection. Kidney disease is a costly disease associated with severe morbidity and premature death. Al Shifa Hospital in association with Al Shifa Charitable Trust is proud to announce that on March 13th,2008 concessional rated packages for dialysis will be distributed. Perintalmanna Municipal Chairman, Mr.C.Divakaran has kindly consented for the inauguration and distribution. | Sreeja hears the sounds of today after a painful five years. | |
|
| Sreeja, a Plus Two Student, had lost her hearing five years ago because of a viral fever affecting her brain and hearing senses. After repeated examinations it was concluded that a Cochlear Implantation would be necessary to get her hearing senses back. Understanding the fact that the implant would cost about Rs 10 Lakh, the family members had lost hope. Sreeja was from a poor family and could not afford such an implant. The members of Samanthasamajum Youth Wing of Nellaya consented to help her. At this juncture Al Shifa Hospital agreed to conduct the Cochlear Implantation for Rs 6 ¼ Lakh, being the cost of implant and the medicine. The surgery cost and all related speech therapy would be done free of cost for the patient. On 17th October, 2007, the implantation was done by Dr.Sharafudheen P.K,HOD, Dept. of ENT. Now, Sreeja has started to know the beauty of sound which she once used to know. Sreeja and her family members express their deep heartfelt gratitude to all those who have helped her. |

| The Association of Otolaryngologists of India (Malabar branch) and the ENT Department of Al Shifa Hospital performed Kerala’s First Live Surgical Workshop on Revision Surgeries in ENT on February 9th and 10th (Saturday and Sunday),2008 at Al Shifa Hospital. ResurgENT-2008 gave a specific surgical insight and practical tips for preventing and managing surgical failures and recurrent problems in common Otologic, Sinonasal and other ENT procedures. This camp was intended for people of age 35 and above suffering from Urological problems. This, one day camp had witnessed more than 200 patients from different districts. | "WORLD DIABETIC DAY " AT ALSHIFA | |

Al Shifa hospital in association with Manorama Arogyam observed “World Diabetic week” from 14th November 2007 to 20th November 2007. The primary aim of this diabetic week was to bring an awareness about the silent Killer disease among the public. Free diabetic Check up was provided to the general public. Consultations in General Medicine, Cardiology and Ophthamology were also arranged to those detected with diabetic disease. Al Shifa Hospital’s social commitment to the poor and needy has helped a huge number of patients. A medical camp was conducted by the ENT department of Al Shifa from 29th October2007 to the 3rd November2007. The primary aim of this camp was to provide free check ups for patients. The camp was performing checkup for a week. The camp also gave an opportunity for the patients to undergo surgeries at a concessional cost of up to 50%. An update on infectious diseases was conducted on 29th July 2007 by the Department of Internal Medicine, Al Shifa Hospital, in association with IMA CGP at the Al Shifa Academic Hall. The event was inaugurated by District Collector, Sumana N Menon and District Medical Officer, K.N Dinesh, presided over the seminar. The update ‘07 was organized with the primary aim to discuss the epidemiology of various diseases presently prevailing.
