Its been long since Hamad, Omani National, could breathe through his nose. Mr Hamad, the 7th son of Mr. and Mrs Mohammed, was diagnosed of very late that he was breathing through his nose. Even after recurring visits to major hospitals with symptoms of cold, change in sound, Sleepless  nights and awaking from sleep due to breathlessness, Hamad was sacrificing to breathing through his mouth.
Hamad's parents have been coming to Al Shifa Hospital for various treatments and procedures. In September 2009, his relatives brought this situation to the notice of the hospital authorities. Chief consultant ENT & Cochlear Implant Surgeon, Dr. Sharafudheen P.K was consulted. The doctor had diagnosed that Hamad was not breathing through his nose instead he was breathing through his mouth as he was suffering from Choanal atresia which is a congenital disorder, where the back of the nasal passage is blocked . The doctor advices that the air passage to the back of the nose could be treated through an endoscopic procedure.

Hamad and his family came back to Al Shifa in september, 2010 to go ahead with the procedure advised by Dr. Sharafudheen. Hamad was accompanied with his mother and brother.

The surgery team comprised of Dr Sharafudheen and Aneasthesiologist Dr. Satheesh with skill full supporting staff. The procedure of endoscopic microdebrider assisted choanal atresia was performed by  to correct the defect by perforating the atresia to create a nasopharyngeal airway. Dr Sharafudheen added that it is very rare, say 1 in 7000, that have such a problem.

Three months later Hamad came back for review, and the tube was removed from his nose. Now Hamad is very happy breathing well through his nose. Thanking Al Shifa and especially Dr Sharafudheen P.K, he left to Oman.

We are happy to inform all that the department of ENT & Audiology has installed GSI 61 Clinical Audiometer (Grason Stadler Inc. 61 Clinical Audiometer. USA). Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) and Speech Audiometry (SRT, SDS) can be done using this instrument along with Behavioural Observation Audiometry (BOA) for infants and children. Audiometric Tests with Hearing Aids (Aided Audiogram) and other special tests are also done to rule out cochlear and retro cochlear pathologies. It also helps to rule out Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD)

We are happy to inform that Visual Field Analyzer machine has been installed at our ophthalmology department. Visual field examination plays a significant role in the detection of Glaucoma and also to assess the progression of Glaucoma. HFA is also an important instrument to diagnose certain nerological disorders.

We are happ to inform that USFDA has approved Laser Treatment for various Skin conditons at Al Shifa Hospital. Treatment includes for various skin conditions like Laser Hair Reduction with Diode Laser and NdYAG for pigmentary disorders are set to be carried out on prior appointment basis. Al Shifa Hospital is proud to inform that we are the first hospital in the District to introduce this advanced machine. Dr.Ashique..K.T MBBS,DDVL will be carrying out the procedure.

The association of Otolaryngologists of India-Malabar Branch Department of ENT, Al Shifa Hospital, will be hosting a Live Surgical Workshop on Controversies in ENT. We are happy to inform that our holter facility has been upgraded to Philips Zymed 1810 Holter Monitoring System with 24hr Digtrack XT recorder at our Cardiology Department. This is one of the sophisticated and advanced Holter recorder and software available which includes basic and advanced arrhythmia detection and interpretation. The Holter report can generated and dispersed with ease. The monitor also has dynamic ST segment monitoring which detects occult ischemia

Automatic method for blood culture and sensitivity test with Bact/Alert 3D and Mini API was installed at Al Shifa on 16/03/2009. The machine was inaugurated by Dr.E.G.Mohan Kumar, Medical Superintendent, Al Shifa Hospital. The machine helps to provide: -> Maximum traceability -> Give targeted therapy -> Highly enriched media ensuring rapid and accurate detection -> Fastidious antibiotic neutralizing capacity for the bio sensor in the media -> Right identification and Resistance information -> Same day result through RAPID indentification and antibiotic susceptibility testing for enterobacteriaceae and Streptococcus.

The Laboratory Department of Al Shifa Hospital bags the Second Ranking in the External Quality Assessment Scheme(EQAS) for the year 2008. Al Shifa's Laboratory comes under the Elite group comprising of over 629 laboratories all the states of India and also Anadaman and Nepal. The various analytes included in the programme are: Glucose, urea, creatinine, total protein, albumin, calcium, total cholesterol, sodium, potassium, lithium, SGOT, SGPT, ALP. Evaluation of the report is based on WHO recommend method expression i.e. Variance Index Score (VIS).

To highlight the needs that caters the requirement of pharmacist in India and abroad and to provide students to develop a strong foundation to build these skills, the college plan to have a “National Symposium on Pharm. Qualified Operation Theatre Technologist's Association conducts the first State level conference "QOTTAFEST 2008" at Al Shifa Hospital's Academy hall on 21st December 2008. The Conference witnessed a huge crowd of more than 250 delegates from all over the State. The Department of Pathology & Transfusion Medicine of Al Shifa Hospital in association with IMA AMS organized a CME on Newer Trends in Transfusion Medicine on 3rd August,2008 at Al Shifa Hospital. The CME was inaugurated by our respected District Medical Officer, Dr. Noorul Ameen and Presided by Dr. E.G.Mohankumar, Medical Superintendent-Al Shifa Hospital. Various renowned faculties from all over Kerala had attended the CME. The programme was the first of its kind in this region and was definitely an unique opportunity to get abreast with the recent developments in this discipline

Mr. Vijayan, who hails from the central district of Kerala, Malappuram, underwent kidney transplantation on February 03, 2008. Under the guidelines of consultant Nephrologist Dr. Pradeep Krishnan, the 30 year old with Chronic kidney failure since 2007, has now became free enough to go wherever he wants. A father of two and working as an asst. mechanic in Saudi Arabia, Vijayan noticed swelling of his legs in mid 2006. The financially poor family was stunned by the subsequent declaration of the dreaded situation by the Nephrologists. He was guided to the shifa kidney foundation and has been on subsidised dialysis. Countrymen lead by the President of Wandoor village council formed the committee to help Vijayan and his family. With the advise of Dr. Pradeep Krishnan, Vijayan started to dream about a world without dialysis after transplantation. But, a suitable kidney & a huge amount involved was an immense task for them Elder sister Padmini, 38 yrs old, mother of two, was happy to donate her kidney. Shifa kidney foundation offered to bear the 50% of the total cost incurred for the transplantation, making things easier. Everything went on as planned on February 3rd, 2008. Lead by consultant Urologist and transplant surgeon Dr. P. M. Murali at Al shifa, the total surgical team performed the surgery and within 7 days Vijayan & Padmini was discharged bringing new hopes to their family.

Al Shifa Hospital continous efforts to provide treatment services to poor and needy had come up with a free medical camp by our Department of Urology on 25th November 2007. This camp was intended for people of age 35 and above suffering from Urological problems. This, one day camp had witnessed more than 200 patients from different districts. A concessed rate for the prescribed urology proceudres were also available to the worthy patients

Al Shifa hospital in association with Manorama Arogyam observed “World Diabetic week” from 14th November 2007 to 20th November 2007. The primary aim of this diabetic week was to bring an awareness about the silent Killer disease among the public. Free diabetic Check up was provided to the general public. Consultations in General Medicine, Cardiology and Ophthamology were also arranged to those detected with diabetic disease. The Manorama discount card holders were also given a 25% discount on Comprehensive health check up during this week. A seminar was conducted on diabetic diseases on 18th November 2007

Al Shifa Hospital’s social commitment to the poor and needy has helped a huge number of patients. A medical camp was conducted by the ENT department of Al Shifa from 29th October2007 to the 3rd November2007. The primary aim of this camp was to provide free check ups for patients. The camp was performing checkup for a week. The camp also gave an opportunity for the patients to undergo surgeries at a concessional cost of up to 50%. Dr. P.K Sharafudheen MS, DLO, headed the camp along with Dr. Naveen Kumar MS, and Dr. Anuradha MBBS,DLO.

Dr. E.G.MohanKumar, Head of the Orthopaedics Department and Medical Suptd., had participated in the international conference of experts in computer navigated joint replacement surgery at the German capital, Berlin. And advanced training in the computer assisted arthroscopic surgeries at the national institute of trauma-care in Stuttgart

An update on infectious diseases was conducted on 29th July 2007 by the Department of Internal Medicine, Al Shifa Hospital, in association with IMA CGP at the Al Shifa Academic Hall. The event was inaugurated by District Collector, Sumana N Menon and District Medical Officer, K.N Dinesh, presided over the seminar. The update ‘07 was organized with the primary aim to discuss the epidemiology of various diseases presently prevailing. Various prominent doctors from all over Kerala were invited to attend and be a part of the discussion.
